Interview with Celebrity Stylist - Mariel Haenn

I thought you’d be interested in getting an insider’s view on the hottest fall trends in Hollywood and the must-have fashions this season from celebrity stylist, Mariel Haenn.

As you may already know, Mariel is the stylist credited with transforming Rihanna’s style, but she’s also worked with Ashlee Simpson, Jeremy Piven, Lauren Conrad, Ciara, Will Smith, Carson Daly, Rainn Wilson, Mandy Moore, etc.

Mariel doesn’t just know about the hottest styles, she also knows simple ways to incorporate new trends into your current wardrobe – so even if you don’t have a celeb budget, you can still have a celeb caliber wardrobe with pieces.

In fact, Mariel has teamed up with the MasterCard and Saks Fifth Avenue Fall 2009 Want it! Collection of statement pieces – the Rocker Boot, Vest and Forever Bag, to name a few – to provide women simple ways to incorporate new trends into their current wardrobe and express their own personal style with versatile fashions (similar to Michael Fink last year).

We were lucky enough to snag an interview with Mariel and she answered all of our questions!

1. Top 5 trends for Fall?
The top five trends for fall that I love right now are from the Saks Fifth Avenue Fall 2009 Want It! campaign presented by MasterCard. Key pieces within that campaign include looks like: the strong shoulder, rocker boots, leggings, cozy knits, and the lacquered lip. All items can be found at Saks Fifth Avenue or on Saks.com and you can use the “the little black card,” the Saks Fifth Avenue World Elite MasterCard for purchases in and out of Saks to earn rewards towards your next Saks purchase.

2. In this economy, what are women really buying this Fall?
This season women should really look to add those staple pieces to their wardrobe. Pieces that stand the test of time and can be worn season after season and still portray that chic look most women are looking for.

3. What do you feel are the worst trends of this season? What should we avoid?
Some of the worst trends for the season would be trying to wear clothes that don’t fit. Having a piece of clothing or an entire outfit not fit properly is definitely a no-no. Also, don’t try to pull off too many trends at once. Trying to overcomplicate an outfit with too many trends should be avoided.

4. How to transition your summer wardrobe to fall?
A few ways to easily transform your summer wardrobe to fall as incorporate a black tight under skirts, dresses or long sweaters. A cozy knit sweater can be worn over anything. A neck loop also transforms key items from the summer to a nice fall look by covering the neck.

5. What is the best style advice you can impart on moms and busy women?
Definitely get yourself a chic flat rocker boot – preferably a motorcycle type. Also try to incorporate items into your wardrobe that transfer easily from a day to night look. A red lacquered lip makes any woman feel amazing and incorporating some sexy shape-wear underneath any piece of clothing allows for a sleek, well fitting look.

6. What can moms wear with destroyed denim and ripped jeans without looking silly?
A strong shouldered blazer can dress up any pair of jeans. Wearing a blazer over a cool graphic t-shirt makes for a great sophisticated look. Don’t try and go over the top and keep to clean, sleek fitting clothes.

7. How to wear thigh high and over the knee boots?
Thigh-high and above the knee boots look great with leggings and t-shirts. Oversized, well fitted cozy knits are also great to wear with your favorite high boot. Just make sure it’s not too short!

8. Trends for coats?
 Make sure you get yourself a strong shouldered, structured coat. Structure is definitely key. Military jackets are also very hot this season. Whatever you wear, just make sure it fits well!

Kim Kardashian wore a black and white Nuj Novakhett Fall 2009 striped dress when she attended the “20th Annual MuchMusic Video Awards” in Toronto this summer.

She accessorized with a black belt, black pumps and a black mini clutch.

Ashlee Simpson arrived on the red carpet with her Melrose Place cast-mates for the “TV Guide’s The CW Fall TV Preview Party” wearing the same dress.

She wore her dress without a belt, but added a dramatic red clutch and white pointy pumps to punch up her look.

I really wasn’t a fan of Kim’s au naturel make-up, but I did like the way she belted the dress so she wins for me as white pumps make me shudders.

The return of long layers

After years of short, choppy layers dominating the catwalk and celebrity circuit, it seems that long layers are finally making a return to popularity. And it's not hard to see why: a long layered cut is one of the most versatile hairstyles you can choose from, and flatters the majority of face shapes. It's easy to maintain and gives volume and texture to flat hair, while providing the ideal shape for naturally curly hair... the list of reasons to choose this cut practically goes on forever!

The long layered cut is expected to be the key hairstyle of 2010

Long layered cuts were all over the catwalks of this year's New York Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week. These two fashion events are the most influential global fashion indicators not only in terms of clothes, accessories and shoes, but also in regards to makeup and hair. Not only that, but several high-profile celebrities have taken to sporting long layers too, which is usually a sign of things to come in terms of hairstyles in the public arena.

With a long layered cut, your shortest layers are still longer than chin-length, which means that they won't blow in your eyes when your hair is loose, and they'll make it into the band or clip of most updos. This cut will still give your hair texture and volume, but it will be a smoother and more natural shape than what is created by short layers. Best of all is that you can make your touch-ups less regular. As a long layered cut has less of a forced shape than a short layered cut, it won't need trimming as regularly to keep it looking its best. As such, long layers are an ideal choice for those of us who are growing our hair to our waists.

Here are just a few celebrities who have already chosen to make the long layered cut their hairstyle of late 2009. By the time 2010 rolls around, this look is set to be huge!

Celebrity hairstyles change as often as the seasons come and go... but do they always get it right? These recent hair color changes struck-out in my opinion. Change isn’t always a good thing!

“I’m Bored with Celebrity Hairstyles”Rihanna, forever the style risk-taker, recently went from black to blonde. Adding in chunky blonde highlights to her dark hair gave her already rocker hairstyle an even edgier look. My take on this celebrity hair color change . . . I think that the blonde is all wrong and should be red or purple instead. This blonde is brassy and in great need of a toner. If Rihanna wants her hair to look rocker-chic, red or purple where the blonde is would give her exactly what she needs.

Celebrity hairstyles transform repeatedly 

Jessica Alba changes hair colors faster than we can keep up with! A few months back she was a brunette, then morphed into a blonde and now she has taken on this auburn red hue. The red reminds me of another celebrity hair color change, namely Ashlee Simpson-Wentz’s. The shade is flattering on Ashlee, but I can’t say the same for Jessica Alba. I would like to see Jessica go back to brunette this season.  Brunette is the most flattering hair color I’ve seen on Jessica Alba for her skin tone.

Drew is a chameleon! 

Just when I was loving Drew Barrymore’s big blonde hairstyle, she goes and switches it up on. Her new hair color of choice is blonde with black tips. This look reminds me of vintage Gwen Stefani when she colored the tips of her hair pink. I’m not sure what prompted Drew Barrymore to do this to her hair, but I am not a fan. She should go back to a honey blonde color for now and ditch the black hairstyle!

ASHLEE SIMPSON on Shape magazine

ASHLEE SIMPSON is showing super-flat abs in a red-hot bikini on the cover of the new Shape magazine, on stands May 5th. Inside, she talks about her new exercise and diet routine.

"I never thought I'd be on the cover of a magazine in a bikini," the 23-year-old singer tells the mag, but says she couldn't say no after working out two to three times a week with celebrity trainer MICHAEL ALEXANDER. She also sticks to a diet of yogurt and granola for breakfast, turkey or veggie wraps for lunch and lean proteins like fish and chicken for dinner.

"I try to listen to what my body craves," she tells the mag. "Sometime it tells me to eat more fruit, but sometimes it tells me to eat Skittles!"
